Why are these concepts important? Because every citizen needs to be able to act in the political arena.
Politics and government make the rules under which we all must live; rules that substantially affect everyone's chances in life. Because this is so, it is strongly in the interest of every citizen to be able to exert influence on the process through which politics and government make and enforce those rules. The key to exerting such influence is the capability to communicate persuasively your beliefs as to what the shape of the rules should be. Anyone who desires to join the conversation about government, politics, and public policy - and that should include everyone - has the responsibility to pursue a level of political education sufficient to be able to participate knowledgeably and effectively in this fundamental social process that so significantly affects all of our lives.
